It was one of the rare villages in Alsace to have escaped destruction during World War 2, and has been elected one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. The towers and colorful half-timbered wooden houses can be admired from a vantage point along the Riquewihr Wine Trail that encircles the village. The architecture here, similar to other medieval Alsatian settlements like Colmar, have a German influence. Autumn is a special time to visit Riquewihr and at blue hour a view of the village from between the vineyards is a sight not to miss. The yellow vine foliage burns bright against the dying blue of twilight, as street lights in the village below start flickering on.
