Built in 1966 by the New York City Housing Authority as part of the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program, Masaryk Towers is located directly north of the Williamsburg Bridge on Delancey & Columbia Streets. Nicknamed “Cream Towers” by locals, Masaryk consists of four 21-story buildings housing over 1,100 affordable cooperative apartments. It became my home for 25 years after my family moved from the Bronx to the Lower East Side back in the mid 1970’s (rent was $186). Growing up, most of my days were spent in Masaryk playing wiffle ball, football, basketball, manhunt, kick the can, skellies or anything else we could think of just to pass the time. This building is where it all started for me and now it’s where it all starts for the LESNYC NFT Collection.
