Picture, for a moment, your favorite place. The color of the walls, the way light enters and fills the space, the sound you make when you step inside. The people- if any at all. For some, a safe space could mean spending time with family, or a daily ritual or going to the gym. So what is it about these spaces that make us feel safe? Is it the things that fill it? The feeling it brings? What makes it YOUR safe space? It's probably difficult to answer these questions because safe spaces are so deeply personal. You chose it to be your place of comfort, a place that’s judgment free. Safe spaces don’t coddle us or blind us from the realities of our world. They offer us a brief opportunity to be vulnerable and let down our guard without fear of judgment or harm. This piece of art was made in collaboration with the community’s responses to what their dream indoor safe space looks like. Our safe spaces are defined by our emotions and experiences. They don’t need to be pretty, popular, or perfect. They just need to be ours!
